Is Your Acne Caused By an Overloaded Lymphatic System?

We talk a lot about the connection between acne, hormones and gut health. An often overlooked cause is an overloaded or lazy lymphatic system.

If you are experiencing acne behind your ears and on your neck, it is likely that your lymphatics need some lovin. It might be time to consult a naturopath for acne.

What is The Lymphatic System?

lympathic-system-and-acneSitting just under the skin, the lymphatic system is a matrix of tissues and organs that help rid the body of toxins, waste and other unwanted materials (such as hormones).

It is a powerful network of elimination, and helps keep the body clean and nourished.

Its main function is to transport lymph, a fluid containing infection fighting white blood cells, throughout the body.

The lymphatic system is made up of lymphatic vessels, which are similar to the circulatory system’s veins and capillaries. The big difference is that the lymphatic system is not pumped around the body like blood. It is a one-way-street of valves, that are activated by things like exercise.

The vessels are connected to lymph nodes, where the lymph is filtered. The tonsils, adenoids, spleen and thymus are all part of the lymphatic system.

The Lymphatic System & Acne Treatment

What does the lymphatic system do?

  • Detoxification
  • Regulates immune system
  • Absorption and transportation of free fatty acids
  • Mood regulation
  • Lymph carries the ‘happy’ hormone progesterone

Signs that you may have lazy lymph:

  • Swelling of legs/ankles
  • Sore breasts
  • Bloating
  • Bags under eyes
  • Swollen tonsils and lymph nodes
  • Post-nasal drip
  • Poor immune function
  • Lethargy
  • Brain fog
  • Cellulite
  • Skin conditions (especially acne)
  • History of tonsillitis

If your lymphatic system is struggling to transport Progesterone, this may contribute to ‘Oestrogen Dominance’ and breakouts. Lymph can also become stagnated in the abundance of nodes in the neck, jaw and ears. This is why we use lymphatic techniques in our Acne Facial.
